Cookie and Ads Notice

Last updated October 22, 2026

The short version. The full details are in the Privacy Policy.

What the game keeps on your device

The game does not set its own cookies. It uses your browser’s localStorage, on your device. Each entry’s name starts with fourthandmiles: and holds one of these:

  • each day’s result, and each practice set you play;
  • the school you saved, if you saved one;
  • a random result token, one per day (fourthandmiles:result-token:<date>), used only so your daily score is counted once in the standings;
  • whether sound is on;
  • whether you chose full or reduced motion;
  • which announcer lines you heard recently, so they rotate instead of repeating.

To remove them, use “Reset today’s game” in the menu or clear this site’s data in your browser.

What our server keeps

When you finish the daily game, your browser sends your total score and (if you picked one) your school to our server. We add them to anonymous daily totals (score bands and per-school sums) in our database provider, Supabase (US region). To count each browser once we keep a one-way hash of that day’s result token, with that day’s score and the first school you picked. No IP address or identifier is stored with the totals, and the totals and hashes are deleted after 35 days. Practice sets are never sent. Details are in the Privacy Policy.

Ads and cookies

Fourth and Miles shows no ads today, and no ad or analytics cookies are set. We plan to show Google AdSense ads. When ads are shown, third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this site or other sites. Read How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services. We do not use Google Analytics or any other analytics service.

Privacy choices

Until ads run, there is nothing to choose: no ads are shown and no ad cookies are set, so the game only uses the localStorage entries and anonymous daily totals above.

Once ads run, Google’s consent tool (AdSense Privacy & messaging) handles your choices:

  • EEA, UK and Switzerland. You see a consent message before any ad cookies are used. You can say yes, say no, or pick what you allow. If you say no, you still get ads, but they will not be based on your browsing.
  • US states with privacy laws. You see a Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information option. Choosing it switches you to ads that are not based on your browsing elsewhere. A Global Privacy Control signal from your browser counts as the same request.
  • Changing your mind. This section is where the “Privacy choices” link at the bottom of every page leads; once ads run, it reopens the consent tool from here so you can change your answer at any time.

Opting out of personalised ads

  • Turn off personalised ads at Google’s Ads Settings.
  • Opt out of other participating vendors at aboutads.info.
  • Block third-party cookies, or clear cookies and site data, in your browser settings.

You will still see ads after opting out; they just will not be based on your browsing.
